MWS has created a system with the potential to significantly reduce the 200,000 tonnes of clinical waste landfilled or incinerated in this country every year. A unique three stage system first sterilises and shreds the waste before producing a dense material. This material is then processed and used to manufacture rigid plastics that can be used to replace wood in industrial products, such as pallets, shuttering and other commercially usable products from waste that was previously landfilled, incinerated and generally regarded as too difficult to recycle.

Newcastle based AWS was established in 2000 and it operates by purchasing a variety of plastics from recycling companies and either reprocessing it or selling it on to plastics reprocessing companies in the UK and overseas. This encourages drinks companies to use more recycled content in their bottles and by recycling more materials, this reduces pressure on landfill sites. AWS operates the largest and most technically advanced plastic bottle reprocessing plant in the UK, creating the world’s largest facility with food grade capability able to process up to 100,000 tonnes of mixed plastic bottles annually.
